Beware of Spyware

Software programs known as "spyware" can be used to steal customer data such as passwords and account numbers from PCs. This information can be used in fraudulent transactions and pose a serious problem.

Beware of suspicious e-mails with an attachment or those asking you to click on a link to an unknown website. The simple act of opening an attachment or clicking on the link secretly installs software onto your computer.

Once installed, spyware can record everything you type, including user ID and passwords and account or personal information. Criminals know how to retrieve this information, or even setup spyware to automatically send your personal information back to them.

How to stay alert

  • Never open e-mail from anyone you do not know.
  • Avoid accessing suspicious websites.
  • Do not log in to Citibank Online from public computers, such as those in Internet cafes.
  • Do not share your computer with the general public.
  • Use a commercially available antivirus or firewall program that blocks computer virus and spyware, and keep it regularly updated.
  • Carefully read messages when you download or install new software.
